Chapter Nine

“Bullshit.”

Viggo gazed at his mate and sighed deeply. He’d thought Jax understood him, had thought his mate didn’t mind that he wasn’t into PDAs. Obviously, he’d been wrong, and Jaxon had been just too polite to breach the topic.

“It’s the truth. I’m reserved with everyone, apart from Thony. Wildcats are solitary creatures, and they don’t like someone constantly touching and petting them.”

When Jaxon looked at him crestfallen, Viggo regretted his harsh words immediately.

“You don’t want me to touch you. Is that it? Not because I’m a man, but because you don’t like people touching you, period?”

This conversation wasn’t going the way Viggo had hoped. “Yes. No. Shit. I’m a private guy, and I’ve never been one to flaunt my feelings in public. They’re private.” Had he explained it all wrong? Of course he liked Jaxon touching him. Loved it, in fact. Just... not in public.

“Yeah. You’re so private even I don’t know what’s going on inside your head.”

Viggo winced, feeling as though he’d been slapped. “That’s how you feel?” he asked in a low voice. He knew he had hang-ups when it came to the mushy stuff. But, damn, he was a guy, not a schoolgirl.

Jaxon turned to the side, giving Viggo a view of his perfect profile. A muscle in Jax’s jaw ticked as he looked out over the lake. The breeze played with his magnificent hair and blew the inky strands around his face.

“I had the feeling you liked my touch. Fine. All right. I’ll try to adjust.”

“You... what?”

“If you don’t like me touching you, I’ll deal with it and just wait until you come to me.” Jax gave him a wry grin that lacked humor. “It’s what people do when dealing with cats, right? They wait until the cat makes the first move.”

Viggo gaped at his mate. “That’s not what I meant. Don’t be ridiculous. I said I can’t stand people coming too close to me, but I love your touch. It’s just hard for me to be all touchy-feely where everyone can see it. And can you not be the perfect, understanding mate for once and just yell at me? I’m starting to feel like a fuck-up beside you.”

Jaxon looked at him, bewilderment written all over his face. “Fuck-up?” The confusion slipped off his face, replaced by anger.

Viggo’s cat didn’t like it when Jaxon was angry with them and curled in on itself.

“Of course I try to be understanding. You’re my mate! You’re confusing the hell out of me right now. We’ve been sharing a bed for some days, and you’ve seemed okay with my hands on your body so far. So, what you’re trying to tell me is you like my touch, but only in the privacy of our home?”

Viggo growled. “Well, we both know I can’t sleep when you’re not in the room.” He knew he should’ve kept quiet by the way Jaxon’s brown eyes darkened.

“So you need my scent to calm your cat, but your human brain freaks out when I come too close?” Jax pulled at his long hair.
